Itinerary | Discover the Dolomites - The Backyard of Alps

Updated: Jul 5

If Annecy in France is the "balcony" of the Alps, then the Dolomites in Italy are the "back garden" of the Alps, left by God.

Hiking in the Dolomites, travelling through alpine pastures full of sheep and cows under blue skies, with the breeze blowing over the blooming wildflowers, knife-cut steep peaks pointing straight up to the sky, dolomite peaks in a continuous line, and stunning sunsets... Here, it must be the best combination of strength and softness.

Les Dolomites

Dolomites - The Backyard of Alps

When it comes to Italy, I'm sure most people think of Rome with its Colosseum, Milan, the fashion capital, Florence, the capital of the Renaissance, Venice, the city of water, and other such famous cities.

Here there are hundreds of millions of years of precipitation to form the dolomite peaks straight into the sky, white clouds around the top of the mountain; there are green grass, cattle and sheep into flocks; there are alpine lakes like jasper inlaid in the mountains ... ...

There is also a poetic name here: Dolomites, which sounds like a place where mountain elves live.

The Dolomites are home to the Dolomites, a beautiful and rich land that compares favourably with other famous Italian cities.

The Dolomites are located on the edge of the border between the Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige regions of north-east Italy, and are part of the northern Italian Alpine system.

Did you know? This beautiful land was once an ocean.

The Dolomites lay quietly at the bottom of the sea 250 million years ago, and after tens of millions of years of geological change and plate movement, it gradually surfaced, affected by erosion, with jagged ridges, deep valleys, and peaks of different shapes.

But the land wasn't always quiet and peaceful; during the First World War, war broke out between Italy and Austria-Hungary, and it was only at the end of the war that the Dolomites were transferred to Italian territory.

The scars of war have also kept the region multilingual, and the names of towns and villages can still be seen on the walk in three languages: Italian, Latin and German.

It is also this intertwining and clashing of cultures that makes the Dolomites all the more meaningful.

Cime di Lavaredo

Cime di Lavaredo,The Three Peaks is one of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the Dolomites and a must for hiking. The film Star Wars was set here, and before 1919 it used to be the border between Italy and Austria.

From east to west are the shortest Cima Piccola (2,857 metres above sea level); in the middle is the tallest Cima Grande (2,999 metres above sea level); and on the westernmost side is Cima Ovest (2,973 metres above sea level).

The three peaks tower over the area in a spectacular and striking way.

Lac de Braies

The beauty of the Dolomites is varied, apart from the handsomeness of the majestic peaks, there is also the softness of the lakes, pristine alpine lakes that look like jasper scattered across the mountains.

Hiking here, strolling by such a lake, reaping the benefits of such scenery, and leaving all the chaos and noise behind is sure to make you feel like you've made a worthwhile trip.

Cortina d'Ampezzo

Cortina d'Ampezzo is an Italian mountain town and the first stop on our Dolomites trek.

The town has only about 6,000 inhabitants, but it has long been known as a centre for winter sports.

It hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics and was booked to host the 1944 Winter Olympics, which were cancelled due to the Second World War.The 2026 Winter Olympics will again be held in the city.

Les Dolomites

Italian Cuisine

Italian food is famous all over the world, and you can't miss out on these dishes when you come to hike in the Dolomites.

The world of pasta is like a kaleidoscope of variations, and the sheer number of varieties and combinations of sauces that can be made into thousands of pasta dishes is a speciality staple in Italy.

Pizza is the soul of Italian cuisine and cheese is the soul of pizzas. Authentic pizzas are usually made with mozzarella, parmesan, romano, cottage cheese or mozzarella. It is very flavourful and tasty.

Come and experience the most authentic Italian cuisine in the Dolomites!
